One of the most important things we bring to light in October is recognizing ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder). For anyone that doesn’t know what ADHD is, it is when a person has trouble paying attention or controlling impulsive behaviors. It can affect children and adults and it causes them to act impulsively in their daily life, even when they don’t want to. It can cause them to not be able to maintain attention or the brain having trouble being able to start an activity that the person is trying to do. There are 3 different types of ADHD: inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and a combination of the two. Inattentive ADHD is when they appear like they aren’t listening, are always losing things, get easily distracted, and have difficulty following instructions. Hyperactive-impulsive ADHD is when they are always moving some sort of body part, they are a difficulty for waiting their turns on things, talks excessively, and has difficulty sitting for long periods of time. The other one is just a combination of the things that I talked about for the other two. The reason why October is the month that people spread awareness about ADHD is so that they can make people more aware of ADHD. People are prone to look past this mental illness because they think that they are just being annoying. Which might be true in some cases, but not all people are annoying to just be annoying. There are people that struggle with ADHD because they are judged and told that they can just fix it by not doing the thing that they are doing anymore. It isn’t that simple and it requires a lot of patience with the person that has ADHD, I know from personal experience because my little brother suffers from ADHD and it isn’t the easiest to handle sometimes.
