Health Problems with Great Danes

Health+Problems+with+Great+Danes

Great Danes, the gentle giants of the dog breeds. They may look mean and ready to take you down, but in reality they are the most friendly out of the dog breeds and they are described to be loyal dogs. That being said though, they still have some underlying health issues that some people don’t pick up on. So, today I’m going to be going over some health issues that your Great Dane can get and how to treat it before it becomes serious.

  • Cataracts: this is something that forms in the eye when the dog starts to age. This happens when the lens of the dog’s eye becomes cloudy due to build-up of proteins. When the proteins start to build up it can film over the eye that can block out of the light, which can lead to blindness as well. Your dog could have to get surgery depending on the health of your dog.
  • Cardiomyopathy: this condition involves your dog’s heart and it is a condition that enlarges the dog’s heart. You can easily tell by the symptoms that they start to show, some of them being: slowing down when they are playing, coughing, starts to have a blue tongue, and is showing less of an appetite. This is more common when your dog is aging and if not treated straight away it can lead to congestive heart failure.
  • Hip Dysplasia: this is a condition that affects the joint of the ball and socket. This is caused when the joints start to develop improperly and it is mostly caused by the genetics of the dog. This is when the ball and socket joint don’t fit together and it can cause painful grinding for your dog. The best thing to do for your dog is to take them to the vet to get it looked at.

I hope by explaining some of these health issues that it will help you to figure out what is wrong with your dog. There are other symptoms that your dog can get, but these are the ones that your dog can get the most.
