Health Problems in Chihuahuas

Health+Problems+in+Chihuahuas

Aren’t Chihuahua’s the cutest things, they look so small and innocent until you actually get to know them, then they are feisty. Don’t let the size fool you though, they can be mean and pack a bit of a punch in those small little bodies. Besides that though, Chihuahua’s have a lot of health issues that get overlooked, so today i’m going to be going over a few of them and telling you guys how to treat those health problems.

  • Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar): you can start to notice if your dog is showing signs of having low blood sugar by if they are showing signs of weakness, dizziness, or if they are going in and out of consciousness. If they are showing any of these signs, make sure that you get them to a vet straight away because this could be an underlying issue that is showing up through low blood sugar. Some of the other things that it could be are either diabetes or liver disease. If your dog is suffering from having low blood sugar, make sure that they are getting the meals that they need; by them just missing one meal it could lower their blood sugar by a significant amount.
  • Tracheal Collapse: we all know that the trachea is a tube that connects to your lungs and mouth. Chihuahuas are most common to having their trachea collapse and if this does happen, then it will cause your dog to have trouble breathing and develop a chronic honking cough. If your dog has blue gums or is fainting, rush them to the nearest vet, so they can get looked at as soon as possible. These are very common in this dog breed and your vet will probably give them some sort of cough suppressants to help them.
  • Bladder and Kidney Stones: these are most common in older, male dogs. Basically what a kidney stone is, is tiny stones that are made up of calcium that is building up your dog’s urinary tract over time. This can cause having trouble going to the bathroom, having the urine come out bloody or intense pain while urinating. More than likely they will end up passing them by themselves, but if they are having troubles make sure that you get them to the vet. so they can get checked on as soon as possible.

These are just some of the basic problems that come with owning a Chihuahua. If you see any of these problems that I have listed or any that I didn’t talk about, make sure that you ask your local vet what is wrong with your dog, so that you can get it the help that it needs.
