Angel Reece, a women’s basketball player for Louisiana State University, was called classless after making a hand gesture towards one of her opponents, Caitlin Clark. The hand gesture was a taunt that the wrestler John Cena had popularized to signify ‘you can’t see me’. She received backlash after their team had won the NCAA women’s basketball tournament against the University of Iowa because of the hand gesture. Many people were saying that she was being ‘classless’ and ‘unsportsmanlike’ just because she held up her hand to her opponent. A sports commentator, Keith Olbermann, called Reese a “f**king idiot” in a tweet because of the hand gesture she had made. Another commentator, David Portnoy, called her a “Classless piece of sh*t”. Many fans believe that Reece should have been given a technical foul for it. Although lots of people are overlooking the fact that Caitlin Clark did the exact same thing in Iowa’s tournament against the University of Louisville, which Iowa won. Fans even praised her for the gesture and made memes about it. Commentators say the difference is that Reece is black and Clark is white. Clark made the gesture and people barely cared, only responding with praise. But when Reece makes the gesture she receives hate and hurtful comments. Reese describes how she has been the target of double-standards all throughout the season. She tells how the media and others call her “too hood, too ghetto.” Reece speaks about how she played for the girls that look like her, “So this was for the girls that look like me, that’s going to speak up on what they believe in. It’s unapologetically you. That’s what I did it for tonight. It was bigger than me tonight. It was bigger than me. Twitter is going to go on a rage every time, and I’m happy. I feel like I’ve helped grow women’s basketball this year. I’m super happy and excited. So I’m looking forward to celebrating in the next season.” Caitlin Clark had scored 191 points during March Madness and she became the highest-scoring college basketball player of any gender in the history of the NCAA women’s and men’s tournaments. This is causing people to say that Reece doing the hand gesture was just a petty Black woman unnecessarily disrespecting the tournament’s biggest star, even though Clark had done the same gesture to a Louisville player just a few days before, and had gotten a way different response. Despite Caitlin Clarks individual success, her team still lost the championship contest and Reese’s team won.
