Valentine’s Day is seen around the world as a day to show love to each other, but it wasn’t always this way. The story of Valentine’s Day comes from a christian feast that honored two Christian martyrs one of them which was named Saint Valentine. This feast that was celebrated was violent and dark. According to npr.org, “The men sacrificed a goat and a dog, then whipped women with the hides of the animals they had just slain”. The Romans celebrated this while drunk and naked. This brutal feast came along with a matchmaking lottery, the men would pick names of women to bring home with them like prizes. This later became a Roman day of fertility and love. As this holiday evolved, it got sweeter and less violent, women began to make handmade cards and gifts for their lovers and it was seen as the day of love. Eventually this tradition came to the new world and during the industrial revolution they had factory made cards, and started mass producing Valentines day all around the country. Today the holiday is a huge money maker for the United States, with people spending their money on jewelry, flowers, chocolates, or roses for their significant others.
