Coping Skills

Coping+Skills

Hayley VanDuyne, Writer

This week at our Gray Matters meeting, we had the honor of having THE Altease Ramsey coming to share a a spoken word with us. Altease describes himself as an artist and while music isn’t his main thing, he did just release a song called “Cupid.”

However this week, Altease shared a spoken word with us. A spoken word is a cross between a poem and a song. This is a wonderful coping skill in the way that it allows so many, including Altease, use writing like this to process all types of emotion. This is such a healthy thing to not only better understand the specific emotion you’re feeling but to also help yourself process it.

While not everyone would enjoy writing about emotion they feel, there are several ways to process emotion. A few weeks ago, FCCLA and TGM came together to put together a coping table. We had several resources on not only processing emotion but also how to identify it. It can be hard to understand an emotion in the moment and then to process it can be just has hard. Britani says she handles the stress by dropping everything she is doing and “leaves it for another day.” Kaitlyn Wilburn says she will either take a nap or drive around and listen to Taylor Swift. Listening to music is a great distraction when you just need to take your mind off of something. Overall, there’s a lot of ways to handle any anxiety you face!
