Weird laws that exist for some reason

Weird laws that exist for some reason

Britani Trujillo, Writer

Laws are rules or foundations put in place by the government to keep the society’s ideal safety or to keep it running smoothly, but there are still laws that make us question. Here are a few weird laws that don’t really make any sense to me.

  • In New Jersey it is illegal to sell ice cream after 6pm, unless the customer has a doctor’s note.
  • In Colorado it’s illegal to mistreat rats.
  • In Maryland it’s illegal to curse or swear near any street, sidewalk or highway.
  • In Arizona you are only allowed to feed garbage to pigs after you have obtained a permit to do so.
  • In California a frog that dies in a frog jumping contest cannot be consumed due to health reasons and has to be “destroyed.”
  • In Florida anyone who owns a place where liquor is sold could be fined up to $1,000 if they allow or participate in “dwarf-tossing.”
  • In Idaho if you ride a merry-go-round on Sundays it is considered a crime.
  • In Illinois, Chicago specifically, it is illegal to take a French poodle to the opera.
  • In Louisiana you can’t tie an alligator to a fire hydrant.
  • In Virginia you’re not allowed to park your elephant on main street.
  • In Ohio it is illegal to kill a housefly within 160 feet from a church without a license.
  • In Tennessee it’s illegal to catch a fish with a lasso.
  • In Washington you may not ride an ugly horse.
  • In Iowa it’s illegal for a man with a mustache to kiss a woman in public.
