Over the past week or so, there have been a series of intense earthquakes affecting Turkey and Syria. The death count is high and continues to climb due to “secondary disaster.” This secondary disaster is people being trapped in their homes and workplaces, hunger, exposure, and suffocation. This is causing the toll of the earthquake to rise substantially.  The total toll is up to 22,000 people. There are some emergency workers at the earthquake sites, but there are rarely enough to help fully. One of the brave helpers, Murat Kucuktecer, has rescued numerous people from the rubble. He tells this story of a 57 year old woman stuck in rubble, “She was inside a 20-inch space where there was enough air, that’s how she survived. It was a miracle, thank God. This is the eighth person I’ve rescued alive. God willing, I still have hope.” This is an inspiring story of someone who truly wants to help the needy people of Turkey. Some of the victims of this event are stuck alive under rubble for close to 10o hours in some cases. This is a scary thought, and an earthquake could happen nearly anywhere. There are some organisations that have gotten together to start fundraising for the people affected by this tragic event. Some even volunteer to go over there and help the cleanup process. This is a tragic event that affects the lives of thousands of people. Many lose their homes, lives, and loved ones. They will eventually recover as a country, but individually, many may never recover mentally, physically, and emotionally.
