This is a debut album from Chora that was released on February 3rd, 2023. A five track, forty-five minute long album that is up there to be one of the most underrated post-metal bands, and I would have posted it with them. My previous article came the day before, and I regret not even waiting to put it on there. That’s why this is here, because this band is absolutely underrated. Compared to the previous article I’ll be ranking and reviewing each and every track in order of track listing.

“You’ve come to grief,”

The first track of this incredible record, this is every bit as good as the underrated bands I touched on previously. There is a nice opening that leads into the hard riffs and then drifts off back into the nice melodic base as before. Drums are a highlight from six minutes to seven minutes. The vocals, and riff follow right along and make this a great introduction to a new band. They surprisingly have no background from previous works, every single musician. The riff at 7:56 is incredible and feels fresh for this genre, but still is grounded in its roots such as the riff at 9:31 and I love it. 9/10

“-“

A personal favorite track of mine, this initially reminded me of shoegaze and post-rock. Not on par with any other track in technicality, but a track I endear because it hits the right spot in my heart. This song is perfectly transitioned and has a sense of dissociation. Reminding me of the Have a Nice Life song “A Quick One Before the Eternal Worm Devours Connecticut” and it perfectly fits in this album. I feel it ties the album perfectly in my taste and that’s why it’s so meaningful of a release/track to me, the song and the entire album.  9.5/10

“old man,”

Starting off slow, drifting off from the previous track. It gets right back into it, with drums again being a highlight. vocals feel like they’re distant compared to how they were performed previously. Vocals come in closer, and the riffs spread throughout the room it seems. The song has a lot of the perks from “You’ve come to grief,” and adds more that I love. The isolation of the bass of 4:00-4:45 is what I love about post-metal, reminds me of a Salvation by Cult of Luna tone. At 6:25 there are vocals that resemble Aaron Turner an absolute unit of a musician. At 8:00 it hits some of the best crescendo in post-metal that I’ve missed to hear from other bands. That transitions into the end and the vocals become even more distant and not clear. 9.5/10

“so there”

That transitions like this article, and it continues to be just as good. subtly of melodic instruments are some of my favorite types of melodies, it adds a layer to the song it wouldn’t have had if it wasn’t there before. It is only held back by the absence of its quirkiness. In the absence of it, it holds up its heavy post-metal and still thrives in its sound. I prefer every other track because of their versatility, but I am understating that this is still just another track. It is just as good as any other track and I would love to hear this live compared to the rest. 9/10

“you must lie.”

The song starts off just like the others in post-metal fashion. A make or break to any post-metal band and especially an album is if there are or aren’t clean vocals, and at 5:05 there are. That makes this album officially good in my book, and furthermore this song yet again is a highlight of a track from every element.  Similar to the highlight riff from “You’ve come to grief” at 7:56, it sounds just as good and it is absolutely uplifting. (The riff is at 7:17 on this track) The album feels like a cycle of going through the same situation but taking a completely different route each time. Every track is fresh, but the drums remain incredible and similar throughout in introducing a song. This song tied all the loose ends with its clean vocals that make this album top tier for a band with less than a hundred listeners. I imagine they’ll be well known in the post-metal genre in the future.  9.5/10

Overall the album is a 9.5/10 I have literally no issues with this record and I respect them to just come out of the blue and create an incredible record. With the tracks listed it words, “You’ve come to grief, – old man, so there you must lie.” I hope to see them make more in the future and even see them tour worldwide, especially for me. This would be a tie at the podium if it were in the underrated post-metal records list, with Thermoclines. I think they well deserve their own review, especially being their debut. Give them some support and listen to them, they’re available on all platforms.
