The Haunting Of Lake Lanier

The Haunting Of Lake Lanier

Sara Schutte, Writer

If you ever feel the sudden urge to drop what you’re doing and take a family vacation, there are some “must avoid” places, one of them being Lake Lanier. The history behind Lake Lanier is truly unsettling and the amount of deaths that have happened at this popular vacation spot is very concerning. Lake Lanier is a man-made lake that was built in the late 1950s. It was made with the intent to manage navigation and flood control from the Chattahoochee River, and used to supply water to people who lived in Atlanta, Georgia. Many people do not know this, but Lake Lanier was actually built over a largely black populated community as well as a cemetery, that had many unmarked graves. Each year over 12 million people visit Lake Lanier, and since the construction of the lake in the late 1950s, there have been about 700 deaths at this allegedly haunted lake. Since there are so many deaths at this lake and knowing the history behind it, many people are convinced the lake is haunted. Stories say that if you swim into the waters of Lake Lanier someone will snatch you and pull you under to join them. There have been reports of different fishermen saying they have seen ghostly kayaks floating on the waters by themselves, and ghostly women wandering around aimlessly on the Jerry D. Jackson bridge. So next time you want to go swimming at Lake Lanier make sure you are aware of your surroundings and who could be in the water with you.
