“Where the Crawdads Sing” Is Coming to the Big Screen

Where the Crawdads Sing Is Coming to the Big Screen

Hayley VanDuyne

A movie based on the national bestseller Where the Crawdads Sing will hit the theaters in July. This novel contains a coming-of-age story as well as a survival story of a young girl left alone in the marshes of North Carolina.

The fiction novel flips back and forth between a present and past tense murder mystery story and the life of a young girl named Kya. Kya was raised in an abusive household and watches as her mother packs up and leaves her family one day. One by one, her siblings leave Kya alone to care for herself and their abusive father. This leaves her with extreme abandonment issues that come up several times throughout the story.

As publicity for this film starts coming out, so do the rumors surrounding this story. There are several connecting factors to the author, Delia Owens, to a case where a poacher had been shot. It turns out that Owens and her husband were actually involved as suspects in this case, which didn’t come out to the public until her book hit the shelves. In 1995, a poacher was shot and the shooter has never been found. Owens story has several elements that are too similar to this unsolved shooting. Personally, while reading this, I did some more research on if Owens and her husband have ever been investigated since these allegations. If you’re interested in this, please check out:
