How Mental Health Affects People of Low-Income

How Mental Health Affects People of Low-Income

Mental health disorders can affect those of any age, race, religion, or wealth class at any time in their lives. Sometimes it occurs when they least expect it, and some may not even know they have a mental health issue. Nonetheless, people of all different backgrounds should be able to recognize the thoughts and behaviors of a mental health problem as well as being able to seek professional help for that issue.

Those living with financial problems or just living in a poor environment overall have a higher probability of being susceptible to mental health disorders. Because of these detrimental living conditions, the homeless or people of low-income “are more likely to experience feelings of worry, nervousness, or anxiety” (usafacts.org). Most of these individuals won’t be able to afford to treat their mental illnesses because of paying for basic needs like food and water. Thankfully, “Community Mental Health Centers offer low-cost or free care on a sliding scale to the public” (mhanational.org).

People who relate to the living situations mentioned or just want to be educated on the topic need to know what to look for in mental health illnesses in order to get help. The most common two disorders: depression and anxiety, both include change in mood. Depression is most known for one feeling overwhelmingly sad for up to months at a time. Anxiety; however, can be recognized by the symptom of not being able to concentrate, sleep, or make decisions properly. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, know that you’re not alone and shouldn’t be ashamed of seeking help.
