The EPA Found Over 9 Million Pipes With Unsafe Drinking Water Across The U.S.

The Environmental Protection Agency, or the EPA, discovered that more than 9 million lead pipes are used to transport drinking water to people’s homes throughout the U.S. Throughout the nation, each state has at least a couple thousand lead pipes supplying drinking water to the citizens. Though, after the survey, the EPA uncovered that Florida and Illinois have the highest number of lead pipes. Florida was discovered to have 1.16 million lead pipes and Illinois has slightly over 1 million. According to the EPA, lead pipes are known to cause health issues to people relying on them for water even at low exposure; “lead is persistent, and can bio accumulate in the body over time”. Millions of people in the U.S. could be at risk, but this issue makes young children and babies more at risk over everyone. Them being exposed to lead could cause damage to the nervous system, learning disabilities, hearing impediment, etc. Lead exposure in adults could put them at risk for cardiovascular, kidney, and reproductive complications.
