34-year-old Artyom Kazantsev gunman opened fire in a school in Central Russia on Monday. This shooting killed 18 and wounded 24 others. The shooter was never detained for at the end of the shooting he shot and killed himself. According to ApNews, “Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the shooting as “a terrorist act” and said Russian President Vladimir Putin has given all the necessary orders to the relevant authorities.”There have been many school shootings in Russia including he Kazan school shooting in May 11th 2021. In this shooting, 15 children were dead and 34 remained wounded. The Kazan shooter was later to be found as a past student of the school. Russia is putting a plan in for better data collection on gun owners to stop these tragedies.

Gun control in Russia is very strict however they are working to make it even more shut down. In 2013 citizens over 18 could obtain a hand gun, this rule has now drastically changed. According to the Washington Post, “The shooting did not appear to be connected with a spate of violence in recent days that followed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s declaration of a partial military mobilization.” This shooting was purely an attack from a past student with no connect to Vladimir Putin’s new declaration. There aren’t many school shootings in Russia compared to the U.S., but the tragedies from the Russian shootings have overpowered any from the U.S.. Russian President Vladimir Putin, put in a plan to tighten gun rules. This plan consists of raising the minimum age for hunting riffles and barreled guns from 18 to 21 years. Anyone under the suspicion of crime or drugs is stripped from any gun rights until further evaluation. There will be a temporary ban for anyone convicted with driving under the influence as well. Any Russian citizens convicted with two or more expired criminal records won’t receive any gun license whatsoever. The minimum age does not apply to any military personnel. The gun laws have severely tightened in Russia because of two tragic school shootings in the matter of a year.
