As Disney continues to leave individuals feeling called out by their recent movies, they discussed plenty of trauma. Another movie was added to this list this past month, “Turning Red,” is a Pixar film set in 2002. This film follows a 13-year old girl through her journey of discovering herself. This movie had some mixed opinions after release.

I believe the person who puts this movie best is Ms. Kershaw, she said , “It felt like they rewrote it like eight times and lost track of the plot.” As much as I enjoyed this film, this is an accurate representation from a viewer’s standpoint.

Even with this I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and felt it had many reademing qualities.

For one, the characters in this film were refreshingly authentic. The main character’s friend group was a collection of three other girls. These were a bunch of snapy, passionate, confident middle schoolers. Their relationship was full of comedy and brought great life to this show. This relationship only grew more fond of viewers over the course of the movie.

The use of comedy was not only seen through the friend group, but as well in the hints to the Anima culture. Throughout the movie there were changes in art style that assimilated the Japanese art cartoon technique known as Anima. These were used as an amazing form of comedic relief.

I honestly believe that this movie held great potential. I think there are many situations where a movie had a great plot, but did not have any sparkle.” An example of this was the movie Raya. The movie had a great plot, the story was logical, and commented on society’s political systems. What separates this movie from Turning Red, is that it had a substantial lack of comedy. For a kid movie this was an extremely boring film.

There are many times where we need suspension of belief. In order to enjoy this film you need to have it.
