New York bans gas stoves and other fossil fuels

New York became the first state to ban gas stoves and other fossil fuels. The ban is part of the new $229 billion state budget that was approved earlier this week and seen as a major step in reducing New York’s dependence on fossil fuels. The law that was passed bans all gas powered stoves, furnaces, and propane heating. As an alternative, people throughout the state will be encouraged to use climate friendly heat pumps and induction stoves. By 2026, the new law will only allow all electric heating and cooking in new buildings that are shorter than seven stories. The only exceptions to the ban are industrial buildings such as hospitals and restaurants. The reason for the ban of gas stoves is the methane which is the primary component of gas stoves. This greenhouse gas has 80 times more warming power than carbon dioxide. According to a 2022 government report, buildings are responsible for 32% of New York’s emissions. The new ban can help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that are produced.
