Fast Fashion

Fast Fashion

Why is fast fashion harmful? Firstly, fast fashion is a manufacturing and marketing method that companies use to mass produce large amounts of clothing fast. Oftentimes the clothing is really cheaply priced and made with very breakable material. Fast fashion is such a problem because many people find these websites that sell cute and trendy clothes for cheap and buy large amounts of the clothing items. But what happens when you don’t want the clothes anymore? Since the clothes are made so poorly, after a few years they become unwanted and are thrown out. The clothing articles end up at landfills or in the ocean just causing more pollution. The Good Trade tells more about this situation, “Brands like Boohoo, for example, use toxic chemicals, dangerous dyes, and synthetic fabrics that seep into water supplies, and, each year, 11 million tons of clothing is thrown out in the US alone. These garments—full of lead, pesticides, and countless other chemicals—rarely break down. Instead, they sit in landfills, releasing toxins into the air. Fast fashion’s carbon footprint gives industries like air travel and oil a run for their money” (The good trade). People will buy large amounts of clothing, allowing the companies to profit off of them and produce more, and then after a few years the items are no longer trendy or they are dissatisfied with the material. Then they throw the clothes away and it adds up to the landfill amount, causing pollution to grow. To help this problem, people should instead invest in brands that use recyclable products in their clothing and limit their amount of buying cheap and low quality clothes.
