On September 14th, 2020, a 15 year old girl named Piper Lewis, killed a 37 year old man named Zachary Brooks. He raped her multiple times back in 2020. After Lewis confessed in 2021, she received a deferred judgement from “Polk County District” Judge, David Porter. After pleading guilty to willful injury and voluntary manslaughter, Porter gave Lewis 200 hours of community service, 5 years probation, and told her to pay $150,000 in restitution. And an additional $4,000 for civil penalties. This could be expunged from Lewis’ record. People all around donated $330,000 to raise money for her restitution; she raised more than double the amount. Lewis’ attorneys have to decide whether they will allow the donated money to be used for the restitution. In June of 2021, Lewis pleaded guilty and was charged with first-degree murder. In the plea agreement, Lewis wrote that she ran away from home multiple times and slept in a hallway of an apartment complex. In that apartment, a man took her in, but she left when he became abusive. Another male took her in and called her his girlfriend while creating an online dating account so she could go and arrange meetings with other men for money from April 2020 until she got arrested for murder. She met Brooks in May of 2020. Brooks gave her alcohol and marijuana and raped her five times while she was unconscious within a three-day period. In her plea, she said she regained consciousness, and he would be on top of her. The man she lived with made her go back to his house for marijuana after threatening her and cutting her neck. Brooks picked her up and they went back to his apartment and he made her take vodka shots and go to his bedroom. She woke up and found him on top of her yet again and then he had passed out so she got up to get her clothes. She came back to his bedroom and found him naked in the bed. She said she was furious so she picked up the knife and began to stab him multiple times resulting in his death. In conclusion, “Many victims’ families fought hard to get the restitution law passed, she said, adding what is needed now is discussion with “a lot of voices at the table to figure out how we get victims of crime the support that they need and not unfairly punish people” said CNN.
