Avocado Crisis

Kati Kratzberg

There are always lots of opinions on closing the U.S. border with Mexico, but one major con would be a shortage in avocados. If the border closes, all trade between the countries would cease, leaving the U.S. at a loss of some major products. In the spring, almost all of the avocados in the U.S. come from Mexico. There are some places in the U.S. that grow their own avocados, but they won’t be ready for sale for at least another month. Some news sites are claiming that the U.S. avocado supply would be completely gone in just 3 weeks. The avocado scare has caused avocado prices to skyrocket by 44 percent. Many people have taken it upon themselves to show their concern for the loss of avocados and other fresh fruit in the United States. Other people think that the movement is extremely stupid and that the U.S. should be focusing on the cost of the border shutdown, which is millions, and not worrying about the millennial food. Either way, the issue is all over the media and people are freaking out about it. How much would you miss avocados if the border was shutdown? For more information on the crisis, The New Republic has lots of facts and opinions on the issue.
