What Sets Science and Pseudosciences Apart?

Are chiropractors all bad? Of course not. Chiropractors are perfect for when you are experiencing some lower back pain, but that is all they are good for. If you go to a chiropractor for any other reason that to relieve back pain, please stop. Chiropractors cannot cure your illnesses. While it might sound crazy to some of you, other people wholeheartedly believe in the miracle of chiropractic care. Recently, I was told by a person who shall not be named to go check with a certain doctor to ensure that I do not have Lyme Disease. The reason this person mentioned it to me is that I have experienced many common symptoms of Lyme Disease, and I have gone to numerous doctors and found nothing. I had been previously tested for Lyme Disease and it came back negative. This test did not stop this person from telling me that I should go see this doctor. This person became increasingly persistent about me checking with this doctor, so I decided to research into said doctor, knowing what I would most likely find. Still, I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt, so I relented and decided to some research.

Immediately, I discovered this doctor was a chiropractor who “specializes” in treating Lyme Disease, and not in just any way, mind you. This particular doctor cures your Lyme Disease with completely natural herbs. Some people have gotten in their minds that you can cure diseases that the body obviously cannot fight off itself with herbs, which do nothing to help fight disease. With these facts at the front of my mind, I clearly and concisely explained why I shouldn’t go to this doctor. The person was outraged with me. “Don’t you want to feel better! You can’t just do nothing about it.” In my mind, not going to this doctor and waiting for my appointment with a real doctor was a much safer option than going to see this fake doctor. Still, this person became increasingly angry with me. This strong belief in something that obviously has no scientific proof behind it made me question how this person could have such a strong belief. That belief also made me question if I was being unreasonable, but after a few quick website checks, I again realized that I was indeed correct with my belief. However, I was still incredibly intrigued by this person’s complete blind faith into this practice. In fact, they are numerous academic papers that discredit chiropractors as anything more than back pain relievers. When I told this to the person, they denied the claims and proclaimed “Science has been wrong before!” Yes, technically, they have been incorrect. The difference between science and pseudoscience is how science will acknowledge that it was wrong and will change accordingly. Besides, the largest skeptics and discreditors to the science community is the community itself. People within the scientific community actively try to prove themselves wrong. That is one of the key factors in the scientific method. Create your hypothesis and try to prove it false. If it cannot be proven false, then it has some credit, but this does not mean that it is 100% true just yet. Still, you need to constantly be trying to prove the hypothesis false. This method creates many solid theories about our world. Contrarily, pseudoscience is the exact opposite. Pseudoscience constantly tries to prove itself right, never even giving notice to all of their mistakes and incorrect beliefs. If you tell them they are wrong, they will deny it by giving you biased and unreliable studies over their “field of study.” Science will instead ask you to prove it wrong. If you cannot, then most likely it is a correct belief. This difference in thinking is what sets science and pseudoscience apart. Science will admit its mistakes; pseudoscience will deny them.
