Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympic Games are held every four years for sports on the snow and ice. The Olympics were held in Pyeongchang County, South Korea. The Olympics are important for bringing countries together, especially this year, with tensions from North Korea. This year the medal count doesn’t look so bad: 23 medals and nine golds, fourth on the table behind Norway, Germany and Canada. Though this seems impressive, this was Team USA’s lowest medal haul since the 1998 Nagano Games. Chef de mission Alan Ashley said on Sunday at the USOC’s closing news conference the winter games had “fallen on hard times” and also stated, “We’re going to look at the other countries, [and ask], ‘What are they doing?’”. Although USA didn’t have the best run at the olympics, they still placed very well overall and athletes did an exceptional job. Americans who didn’t place but made headlines were: Mirai Nagasu is the first American woman to land a triple axel at the Olympics and Nathan Chen was the first skater to land five quadruple jumps in the Olympics.
