Where’s the Spirit?

Claire McLoone

From my past three years of my high school experience, it seems the school spirit levels have dropped significantly. Everyone dreads going to class and never participate in any activities. Why is that? I mean, our classes do overload us with readings and papers; we are supposed to make time for that pep rally and support our school’s teams when, the entire time, we list all the things we have to do when it’s over. So, what do we do? First, we need to start being inclusive, have a more welcoming student body. I’m noticing upperclassmen and underclassman sitting on opposite sides of the gym or just simply ignoring them at football games. We are all on the same side! It’s time to come as a whole. School spirit is important for the complete high school experience and brings all the students together to celebrate the school and the pride in our sports teams.

Having school spirit allows us to socialize and take a break from the constant hall of homework.  It encourages our teams to play better because they have students cheering for their win and it can boost our moods while relieving some stress. Now, I get it, it’s hard to get the energy to do these things, especially if you just came from a grueling practice, have a paper to write, or a math test the next day. A lot of people are in the same boat. Having the school come together and celebrate is an amazing experience and I want to see more of it, go out, support ALL the teams, and have a good time so we can get our minds off of class. High school is only what you make it. Have a positive attitude – day in and day out, win or lose. Are you willing to accept the challenge of stepping up and expressing your support for your school?
