Drew’s Train of Thought

Why do people enjoy spicy foods so much? It is literally painful to eat some spicy foods. So why do we do it? Is it because we like to be in pain? Is it because we want to show how much pain we can handle? According to Chef Phillips from the Culinary Institute of America, we develop an affinity for these spicy foods over time, but only after we become more tolerant of the spice. Chef Phillips also says that women are more likely to do for the kick, whereas men do it more for the attention. Although personally, I think you get the wrong kind of attention if you pick a spice that is too spicy. Like picking the ‘Blazin’ sauce from Buffalo Wild Wings (It’s made with ghost pepper). When I dipped my chicken into the sauce five times, I was completely unprepared for the amount of spice. I spent the next five minutes beet-red and begging to go to DQ (We did, I got a Royal Ultimate Choco Blizzard, not sponsored). However, I did enjoy the experience afterwards, even though I felt like my throat was lightly roasting for the rest of the night.

Why are videos like the one below so funny? What makes this so much better than the unedited version? Is it because we enjoy a distorted view of reality? Or is it because it highlights the funniest parts and raises the comedic value even more? Whatever the reason, I still think videos that are extremely distorted and hyper-edited are hilarious.

Why do people think they can change the pH of their bodies? Your blood has to be slightly alkaline with a pH of 7.35 and 7.45. If the pH goes beyond this range in either direction, you will die (Also, anything above a pH of 7 is considered basic, so we are all basic). Since your blood has to go through each and every organ in the body, it means that most of your organs also need to be within that range. Obviously, your stomach is acidic since you need to digest food. The main reason people believe that you can change the pH of their bodies is because the pH of your urine can change. People then claim that your body needs to be in an alkaline state to be healthy. You can apparently determine this by measuring the pH of your urine. But there is a flaw in this thinking. Urine is a waste product. Anything that is not being used or is in excess, is expelled from your body because you don’t need it. Therefore, if you eat foods with more alkaline, your urine would be more alkaline. But changing the pH of your urine literally has no effect on the rest of your body. Your body already regulates the pH of the blood and organs. Organs like the kidneys and lungs help regulate the pH in your body. Although going on an alkaline diet is healthy, it is healthy for the wrong reasons. It is not healthy because it changes the pH of your body; it is healthy because the diet is based on eating vegetables and other healthy foods. Going even further, why do people believe in things that are proven wrong? For example, how do people even begin to think that the Earth is flat? It’s basic science. Even more than that, it’s common sense. If the Earth were flat, logically the Earth would be completely dark for a certain amount of the day and completely light for the other part of the day. Don’t believe me? Take a flat circle, obtain a light source, then shine the light on the circle. Since it is two-dimensional, one side is lit up, and the other side is dark. Do people just believe that scientists, doctors, and other such scholars are out to deceive the world and make them sheep?
