European Snow Volleyball

European+Snow+Volleyball

On March 24th, the European Snow Volleyball Tour kicked off. Snow volleyball goes back to 1955, however it could be older. 1955 is when there was first photographic evidence. The modern game of snow volleyball began in 2008 in the mountains of Wagrain, Austria. The Snow Volleyball Tour was created in 2012 and was powered by Amway with the slogan, “Served Ice Cold.” The tour continued to expand with 6 stops in the 2015 season. On October 16, 2015 in Sofia, Bulgaria, the European Volleyball Confederation added the sport to their official calendar. The first official tour was in March and April of 2016. Europe’s best 24 men’s and 24 women’s teams competed in Bulgaria for the first European champion title after 6 tour stops and 17 national championships served as qualifying events. The sport does differ from sand volleyball though. During the 2018/2019 snow volleyball changed to a 3 vs 3 format instead of 2 vs 2 and they get one optional substitute per team. They can use two substitutions per team per set if needed. Also, they only play to 15 points, instead of 25 points. During the tour, there are 12 teams of each gender. Anyone can play as long as they are holding the nationality of the country and are registered within the same National Federation. The prize money is 3,000 EUR ($3,252.56 in America) per gender event. You must be registered 15 days before the event. You can register through your National Federation. Volleyball is now accessible at any time of the year, from summer to winter to indoor.
