Different Countries Customs

Different Countries Customs

Sara Schutte, Writer

There are so many interesting and different customs all around the world that differ from the popular US customs. For instance in Greece a popular custom is to spit on the bride during her wedding. This may seem weird to other countries but for Greece spitting on the bride represents one of the many tactics they use during milestones to ward off the devil. Weddings are not the only events where people from Greece will spit on one another, they will also spit on the baby while it is baptized to bless them with beauty and good health. The Philippines have an even weirder custom where they will point with their lips. It’s a common thing to point with their lips instead of their fingers because it is seen as more convenient. Russia has strict rules on giving flowers because they have different meanings. Yellow blooms signify a relationship breakup, and you definitely don’t want to give someone red carnations since those are the flowers that are placed on the graves as well as offered up to surviving war veterans. If you are enjoying a meal in Egypt don’t ask for someone to pass the salt because it is insulting to the host. They believe that if you have to sprinkle salt on your dish you are implying the dish is repulsive. Make sure to never show up on time or early in Venezuela because that is seen as rude. It is recommended that you show up ten to fifteen minutes late if you are invited over. If you are ever doing business in Turkey don’t worry about paying for your meal because the host will cover that for you. If you offer to split the bill it will be seen as polite but won’t be accepted. It is interesting to learn about how different countries do and view different things.
