Who Was Tyre Nichols

Mason Teemant, Writer

Tyre Nichols is a name that has been all over the news lately. There are mostly peaceful protests about police brutality following this man’s death. On January 7th, Tyre Nichols was brutally beaten by a group of police officers. He was pulled over for reckless driving,  but tried to escape on foot. The officers caught up to him and beat him. His family said that he was unrecognizable when they visited him in the hospital. He passed away 3 days earlier. The Memphis Police Department released the footage of the incident. In the video, Nichols was dragged out of his car, shouting profanities. An officer tries to taze him, but he starts to run away. The officers eventually caught up to him and began to punch, kick, and beat him with batons. This was all 100 meters from his family’s home. There were several protests across the US, calling for an end to police brutality. There were some protesters in Los Angeles outside of the Police Department. There were officers in riot gear. In Memphis, where it occurred, there were vigils at local churches. The police department said that there were 7 officers involved in the incident.

In the last 4 years there has been a real problem with police brutality. There needs to be a change in the way police are hired or trained. There has to be a change.
