Rick and Morty Co-Creator Justin Roiland Fired from Adult Swim

This past week Justin Roiland was fired from Adult Swim following domestic abuse charges. The creator of the show Rick and Morty was charged with felony abuse charges in the state of Florida. Roiland was released on $50,000 bond. He is set to return to court in April. His attorney says, “To be clear, not only is Justin innocent but we also have every expectation that this matter is on course to be dismissed once the district attorney’s office has completed its methodical review of the evidence.” This is an optimistic way to view Justin’s situation. There is enough evidence to convict, says an anonymous person on the case. Adult Swim is halfway through a 70 episode order for the show, and plans to recast the voices for the remaining episodes. This will most likely be met with controversy from fans of the show. Justin Roiland was the voice for Rick and Morty and other various smaller roles.

As a fan of Rick and Morty myself, I find it very unfortunate. The show will not be the same after this. Without Justin Roiland’s iconic voices, the show will be different. The recast will change the show, not only because of the voice change, but because of the unique ideas and perspectives brought by Justin Roiland. While what he did was wrong, if he did in fact do it, the show will suffer without it. I don’t expect it to continue after the episode order is complete. This is a hard reality for fans of the show. Even if Roiland is found not guilty of his crimes, he will likely not be returning to Adult Swim. His memory lives on forever and always in us.
