Breakfast at School

Breakfast at School

Hailey Schoutteet, Writer

School breakfasts should be required in every school. We get lunch at school so why not breakfast for the students that may need it and not have it at home. Public Act 096-0158 requires that the board of education of each school district in this State shall implement and operate a School Breakfast Program in the next school year in accordance with federal guidelines in each school building within its district in which at least 40 percent or more of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches. Breakfast as part of the school day increases access to the nutrition all students require each morning to learn and succeed in the classroom. Students should be able to be provided with breakfast or a small treat in every school. Children of all ages who regularly miss any meal, especially breakfast, are more likely to have bad grades and need to receive mental health counseling than other children who do not struggle with food insecurities. I personally think breakfast at our school would be a good idea because there are a lot of people that may not have time for breakfast, or they may not have the money to eat breakfast at home every day. While we are provided the snacks in the office for a dollar I believe we should have more options available to us.
