Old vs. Modern Pirates

Old vs. Modern Pirates

Piracy started as early as the 14th century. Piracy was seen as a very honourable profession and it was a way to make a good living. However, by the Classical Greece era the profession was looked down upon due to the selling of women and children into slavery. Illegal trade was a major way pirates made money. Pirates dominated the market of foreign trade because of the outlaw of overseas trade, and pirates specialized in smuggling and illegal trade. Pirates could also act as a political authority by taxing citizens in exchange for protection. Pirates raided many ships however, it was very rare for pirates to actually bury their treasure because they would need the items for trade. They almost always stole food, water, alcohol, water, and clothing. Sometimes even, they would keep the ship they raided.

In the 1980’s piracy ramped back up again. Between 1993 and 2003 pirate attacks tripled, with 200 attacks worldwide. The people most similar to older pirates are called “small pirates.” They are only interested in loot and work only for themselves. The other type of pirates are “organized pirates” and they are connected to a bunch of other groups of pirates. They don’t just want to loot small ships, they have to assemble big attacks in order to attend to their business needs. Modern pirates drive speedboats with radars and sonar. They have enough connections to where they can locate machine guns and torpedoes. While pirates today have more access to technology, their attacks are still just as frightening as older attacks because they kidnap people for ransom and murder.
