Extreme Weather Events of 2022

Weather so far in 2022 around the world is crazy. Ranging from hurricanes to tornadoes, anything seems possible.

In January of 2022, winter storm Izzy hit the southeast and left thousands of people without power. North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky were hit very hard by storm Izzy. Izzy brought snow, ice, wind, and freezing temperatures. The storm left more than 100,000 people without weather and some places with up to 10 inches of snow. Izzy also led to many car crashes and calls for assistance.

Also in January of 2022, snow storm Malik hit Northern Europe. Malik forced public transportation to be shut down, markets to be flooded, and several people to be killed. Many places also declared an emergency order for people to stay home during storm Malik. The storm brought with it hurricane-level winds, flooding, and lots of power outages.

Massive floods hit Malaysia also in January of 2022. More than 125,000 people were evacuated as heavy rain caused many states in Malaysia to flood. The country’s annual monsoon season usually brings lots of rain, but this year the rain was above average. The heavy rainfall displaced more than 8,000 people and filled up over 90 relief centers. The floods also killed at least 50 people.

In February of 2022, Texas also got hit with a crazy ice storm. In the northeast, the states got pounded with sleet, snow, and ice. The storm covered neighborhoods in New England and New York with more than a foot of snow in some places. Several flights and schools were canceled also.

These were only some of the crazy weather events that have happened around the world so far in 2022.
