The beloved actor Johnny Depp, who starred in many movies from the Pirates of the Caribbean to Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, started a trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard on tuesday (4/19/22). The couple had split apart early 2015, but the “drama” began in 2018 when Amber wrote an article for The Washington Post about how she is a domestic abuse survivor, saying, she is a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” Although the article never named Depp, he says that publishing it cost him, “nothing shy of everything.” Due to the post and the allegations made against him, he lost multiple contracts with companies, and most of his honor.

Depp decided to sue Amber for $50 million dollars for defamation, to which she counter-sued in 2020 for defamation as well. Her counter-sue against Depp comes from a comment made saying that her allegations were an “abuse hoax,” and she claims that Depp “authorized and conspired” with Adam Waldman to “attempt to destroy and defame Ms. Heard in the press.”

So far, Depp has stated that he never struck her or any other woman, and that she was in fact the aggressor. He also said there were multiple aggressive arguments that would escalate into physical violence.

“It could begin with a slap, it could begin with a shove, it could begin with throwing a TV remote at my head, throwing a glass of wine in my face,” says Depp.

He named one account in which Heard had gotten angry about a potential postnuptial agreement and threw a vodka bottle, which shattered on his hand, injuring his middle finger.

He said, “The tip of my finger had been severed and I was looking directly at my bone sticking out.”

The trial still continues as the jury comes to a conclusion, and Parker Traman has said it is “the O.J. Simpson case of our generation.”
