Sir Ernest Shackleton

Gracie McHenry, Writer

Sir Ernest Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish explorer. He was born on February 15, 1874. He died on January 5, 1922. He died of a heart attack. He had three children. He led three British expeditions to the Antarctic. He was one of the top people in the Heroic Age of the Antarctic Exploration Period. He discovered the Beardmore Glacier.

In 1915, his ship, Endurance, was trapped by a dense pack of ice. Shackleton and his crew made an escape. In Antarctica he got stranded on the ice for around 10 months, however, his entire crew of 28 men, still made it back. The crew had to row back to safety.

His ship sank over one century ago. It finally has been found. Endurance has been found almost 107 years later in almost perfect condition. The temperature is just below 0, meaning no wood-eating microbes and microorganisms. The ship was found at a depth of almost 10,000ft.

The Expedition was started in early February. The goal of the expedition was to “bring the story of Shackleton, his ship and the members of his team to younger audiences”. Now with the ship being discovered, it gives everyone a new look into Shackleton.

The wreck will be protected as a Historic site and Monument under the Antarctic Treaty, making sure it isn’t disturbed while being filmed and photographed.

This story is pretty interesting because why is the ship just being found after 100 years? Pretty suspicious. Also, the fact that they were stranded for 10 months is also pretty crazy. And even that they had to row back to safety.
