COP26: A Hopeful Outcome

COP26: A Hopeful Outcome

The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, was the 26th United Nations Climate Change conference. From October 31st to November 13th, country representatives met at the SEC Centre in Glasgow, Scotland, UK to discuss solutions to the  growing climate change issues that are becoming increasingly worrisome.

According to the New York Times, both the United States and European Union “promises to cut their emissions roughly 50 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.” Neither of these countries are carrying out their promises. Although working to lessen emissions, the action is not enough to slow the climate rise in temperature. Scientists say that to hold global warming to a lower level of 1.5 degrees Celsius, the world’s nations must collectively cut emissions in half.

After days of deliberation, not only did countries make an official agreement, but also established commitments to various conservation efforts, including “a deforestation pledge, a methane abatement pledge, an agreement to end overseas financing of oil and gas projects, and a steel and aluminum trade agreement” (American Action Forum.) The United Nations Climate Change Conference outcome brings hope to a problem largely affecting our world. With a rise in legislation, our world is taking small steps to lower the climate change temperature, creating a brighter future for our home tomorrow.
