The Death of the Messiah

The Rise of a Great King Matthew 7:28

As discussed in the last article the Gospels are about a real hero who saved your life by His pure love for you. Sadly like most heroes tales the hero dies but comes back to save the day and that’s exactly what Jesus does. We start the rest of our journey through Matthew starting with Matthew 7 here Jesus is making it a point yet again to love our neighbors and enemies by not judging them. He does this by giving us parables. Then He tells us that all we have to do is ask God and any door in our life to open it just by giving it a knock. Meaning that through prayer we can cast out our demons and not let Satan hold onto the chains which bind us. Jesus then says to his crowd  “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.  But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (Matthew 7 13-14)¨ meaning the path to Heaven is not an easy one but the path to hell is very easy to find and reach but that path leads to destruction, loss, and pain whereas the path to Heaven will lead to eternity. That idea will be later picked up when Jesus is carrying his cross. Then we are told that there will be false prophets who wear sheep’s clothes but underneath are evil as wolves and do not listen to them because the way to heaven is not through them but by following the will of God. After this Jesus went on and cured a man with leprosy but only because the man had faith in Jesus and in God Jesus then went on performing many other miracles curing the paralyzed casting out demons and even making the blind see. Then we met Matthew. He was a tax collector, a hated man and Jesus took him in and loved him as a brother. Then after eating with Matthew and other sinners a man came up to Jesus saying his daughter had died on the way to the man’s home. A woman touched Jesusś cloak in faith that by only touching the cloak she’d be healed. Jesus noticed this and said “Take heart, daughter, your faith has healed you. (Matthew 9 24)” Jesus then raises the dead girl and brings her back. He then gives the power to perform these miracles to his disciples to move out. It was later when Jesus hinted at the way he will die by telling his disciples ¨Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. (Matthew 10: 38)¨ He then again foretells what is to happen in Matthew 12 40 by saying ¨For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.¨ Later on John, the baptist was taken in and beheaded by Herod. After this Jesus went out and preached and healed the sick. He then told the disciples to go on early without Him then Jesus caught up with them by walking on water that freaked his disciples out making them fear He was a ghost. Then a disciple by the name of Peter began to walk on the water towards Jesus’ nut when he lost sight of God and began to become afraid he started to sink where Jesus saved him by catching his hand. Then Jesus feeds an enormous crowd by giving thanks to God and breaking 7 loaves of bread and a few fish He fed 4,000 people leaving the remaining 7 baskets of broken loaves of bread as leftovers. He then did the 1 more time but for 5,000 men.

One time when the disciples came to Jesus they asked him who the greatest in heaven is and Jesus then responded with  “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.  Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.  And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. (Matthew 18 3-5)¨ meaning if you don’t produce the faith of a small child you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Then Jesus tells us that we should always forgive your brother and sister just as the Father forgives us. He then tells us what commandments still stand and hold value those being “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 19 18-19)¨ Jesus even goes on to say that the treasure and fortune on Earth mean nothing in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Yet again Jesus predicts his own death making it noted three times by saying “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death 19 and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day, he will be raised to life! (Matthew 20 18-19)” Later that week Jesus met with the Chief Priests and Pharisees and through parables called them crooks and false teachers and tells them “‘The stone the builders rejected, has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed. (Matthew 21 42-44)” the Pharisees even try to test or trick Jesus by asking him what the greatest commandment is He responds with ¨Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. (Matthew 22 37-40)”

The prophets one day asked Jesus the signs of His return He provided them with this answer “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,  and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 24: 4-14)¨ Then he tells us that not even He knows the time or hour that it will happen but only God knows. Then a young woman came to Jesus and dumped expensive perfume on his head to prepare him for burial and then Jesus said wherever this gospel is preached she will be included in her memory. After this Judas went to the head priests and asked them what they’d give him for Jesus and they said 30 pieces of silver.

During the last supper, Jesus announces that one of these disciples will betray him and they were shocked and one by one told Jesus they would never. Later that night Judas meets again with the high priest and they move on to arrest Jesus. Judas once seeing he had condemned Jesus in distress gave back the money and hung himself. Later when Jesus was handed over to Pilate he tried to set him free but the crowd wanted the murder and sinner Jesus Barabbas. The crowd then all yelled out to crucify Jesus the Messiah. Pilate finally gave in and released Barabbas and gave Jesus over to the crowd to be crucified. Then they whipped Jesus and then mocked him by giving him a crown of thorns, a staff and a robe yelling ¨all hail the king of the Jews¨ then took the staff and bread Jesus on the head and then took him to be crucified. Then as they made Jesus carry the cross a man named Simon ran in to help Jesus carry the cross. They then crucified him above Jesus laid a board which read ¨This is Jesus, The King Of The Jews. (Matthew 27 37)¨ After a day on the cross Jesus died as he died and ¨At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. (Matthew 27: 50-53)¨

Then 3 days later there was an earthquake and an Angel of the Lord came down and rolled back the rock and Jesus was brought back from the dead. There both Mary Magdalene and the other of Jesus Marry rushed to the disciples to tell them that Jesus had risen. So they met up in Galilee and Where Jesus was waiting for them. Many people saw Jesus when he came back in doing so he came back 4 times and on the 4th he was taken up by the Father in the sky but the only one told by Matthew is the first where Jesus tells the disciples “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (Matthew 28:18-20)” This meaning since Jesus has defeated death he now has the authority to forgive sins and save those from death and tells his disciples to go spread the good news of me and baptize them by the Holy Spirit. Jesus died for us because of his undenying love. From the beginning of the journey, he knew what was to come and who would betray Him and He still chose to go down this path because he knew that this sacrifice of his own life meant less to Him than losing you. God loves all and wishes to send no to hell but those who do not follow in His footsteps and do not accept the free gift of Jesus Christ will be damned to the eternal flame rather than spending eternity full of love and peace.
