Alright y’all, I’ve decided to bring back recipes from our favorite childhood movies and shows. Today, I wanted to explain a recipe to you guys that makes me hungry every time I see it: Tiana’s Beignets! This yummy pastry that was featured quite a bit in Princess and The Frog is a relatively easy recipe to make to keep you occupied for awhile. This pastry is a fan favorite down in New Orleans; or at least in the movie, and it’ll make you feel like you’re eating at a restaurant down-town in the crowded city. It takes awhile to bake, but the end result will be totally rewarding. Here’s what you need to know:

Ingredients: (all according to SparkPeople.com)

– 3 cups all purpose flour 

– ⅓ cup granulated sugar

– 2 tsp baking powder

– ½ tsp kosher salt, coarse

– ½ nutmeg, ground

– 1 cup buttermilk

– ⅓ cup water

– 1 large egg

– ½ tsp vanilla extract

– ½ cup powdered sugar

– canola or vegetable oil  (for frying)

Directions: (all according to SparkPeople.com)

  1. In a medium bowl, combine 23/4 cups of flour with the given amounts of sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg. 
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the given amount of buttermilk, water, egg, and vanilla extract together. Then, stir in the flour mixture from step one. 
  3. Use some of the remaining flour to dust your work surface. Place the dough on it and pat it into a large ½ inch thick square. Dust the top with more flour if it seems sticky. Then, slice the dough into 2 1/2 inch squares. 
  4. Now, for the best part: frying the beignets! Heat 2 inches of canola oil or vegetable oil in a heavy saucepan on your stove top until the temperature reaches 325. 
  5. Carefully drop 3 dough squares at a time into the hot oil (TIP: if you can’t tell if your oil is ready to fry your beignets, stick the end of a wooden stirrer/mixer to see if it boils when it’s stuck in). Cook the beignets for 3 minutes. Turn them over and cook the other side for another 3 minutes. When cooked, use a slotted spoon to transfer the pastries onto a rack to cool. 
  6. Put your desired amount of powdered sugar and/or honey for topping off your beignets and enjoy!!
