Galentine’s Day

Galentine’s Day is a day in celebration of female friendship created by the fictional, Parks and Recreation character, Leslie Knope. The unofficial holiday is celebrated the day prior to Valentine’s Day on the 13th every year. In the ¨Galentine’s Day¨ episode Leslie gets her closest girlfriends and family together for brunch and showers them with a bag of gifts in celebration of their friendship. Galentine’s Day is to Valentine’s Day like what Friendsgiving is to Thanksgiving. Leslie explains Galentine´s in the episode stating ¨Every February 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies.¨ What was once an unknown holiday has now received promotions, like special happy hours, group spa discounts, and of course brunch deals. When the episode first aired 4.98 million people watched it, and it is also the highest-rated episode of the season. Galentine’s Day turns ten this year from when the episode aired back in 2010. Galentine’s Day fits right into the month of love, February and fills the void in the Valentine’s Day market that leaves single women feeling alienated by the standards surrounding the lover’s holiday. Many women love Galentine’s Day because they get to celebrate each other, and their platonic friendships, and it defies cultural norms.
