The Truth About Esports

Lauren Handley, Writer

At the beginning of the year, I did an article about what esports was at our school. I am part of this amazing club, but I am in only one of the teams that you can play on. I am apart of one of the teams for a video game called Overwatch. I chose to play Overwatch, but if you chose to join you could play one of the other games we offer.

What some people tend to not realize is that esports is not focused on just one game and if it was then not everyone would even get to play and or want to play. We have several different video games that you can choose from to play and sometimes you can even play multiple video games. Yes, we are one club, but we play different games. We have the options of Overwatch, Rainbow Six, CSGO, and League of Legends. Plus we hold tournaments and do fun things like Dungeons and Dragons at times.

Now, some people also think that in esports all we do is just play video games, but it is more than that we play as teams competing in matches with other schools across the United States. We have to play as a team and work with each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Yes, the point is to have fun but we are building skills like teamwork and listening. We also work on leadership skills and are helping each other grow and become better. I have been in this club ever since it began and from it, I have grown as a person and so have the people around me.

You may think that there is nothing to playing and being apart of this club or you may think that we are lazy because we sit in front of computers for several hours playing these games, but we are learning so much from each other and building very important skills along the way. I hope with this article that it can show you what esports is and what it can do.
