Cross Country Regionals

Allen Catour, Writer

This past Saturday the cross country team ran at Regionals in Rock Falls. It was a great day for running. The weather was a little bit chilly, but there was hardly any wind. Regionals officially kicks off the state series. In order to advance to Sectionals as a team, you have to place in the top seven. As an individual you have to place top five out of the individuals not on a qualifying team. The big question headed into Regionals was how the runners would respond to the long break from competition since their meet at Amboy on Columbus Day.

The girls ran first and did well. They ended up placing third as a team and punching their ticket to Sectionals. It’s their third straight year qualifying. Last year the girls got a glimpse of the potential they have. They’re looking to break through this year and earn a trip down to Peoria for State. The girls repeated as TRAC conference champions and now look to achieve their next goal. The girls will run in Oregon on Saturday at 10 am. Make sure to wish them good luck as they prepare to compete this weekend.

The boys started after the girls’ race was completed. The boys ran good ,with many runners getting PRs, but their efforts weren’t enough to make it to Sectionals. The team finished in ninth place and only six points behind seventh place. Looking forward to next year there is good news for the boys. There are no seniors graduating, so the team should look similar and have another year to come back strong. This year the boys had to adjust to a new lineup and they looked good overall. They were constantly up there in the competition and next season is looking bright.

The runners responded very well to the long break from competition. The girls were able to take the next step in the postseason and the boys ran very good times. Everything now comes down to Saturday. The girls have been focused and dedicated all season on their goal to make it to State. Now is the time where they must perform at their highest potential. Similar to last week, the key to moving on will be peaking at the right time. Once again the girls will be running in Oregon on Saturday, November 2 at 10 am. Good luck!
