2020 NCAA Championships Predictions — 125 and 133 lbs

Allen Catour, Writer

The 2020 NCAA Division 1 Wrestling Championships is set for March 19-21 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It’s always a very exciting tournament. The best of the best clash, upsets occur, and the atmosphere is electric. I’d like to to give my predictions for two of my favorite weight classes.

125 lbs- Spencer Lee is the clear favorite to win his third consecutive title this season. The junior from Iowa has been unstoppable in March, scoring team bonus points in four of his five matches his freshman year and outscored his opponents 55-7 last year. Wrestling fans have already been wondering if he’ll become a four time national champion. Jack Mueller from Virgina is a contender in this weight class. He dominated the number one seed, Sebastian Rivera, in the semifinals before losing 5-0 to Lee in the finals. Rivera beat Lee twice last year at the Midlands and Big Ten Championships and could possibly win his first title. Nick Piccininni shocked the wrestling world when he pinned Lee in the Iowa vs Oklahoma State dual meet on February 24. He’s also another favorite to dethrone Spencer Lee. Prediction- Spencer Lee (Iowa) beats Nick Piccininni (Oklahoma State) for his third career title.

133 lbs- The off season has seen a lot of changes to this weight class. With 2020 being an Olympic year, many high profile wrestlers have announced they’ll be taking an Olympic redshirt this season. Among these wrestlers are returning national champion Nick Suriano ( Rutgers), runner up Daton Fix (Oklahoma State), and Stevan Micic (Michigan). The new favorite is Seth Gross from Wisconsin. Gross won a national title in 2018, beating Micic in the finals, before sitting out last year due to injury. He transferred to Wisconsin after his old coaches left South Dakota State. Gross has been very dominant recently and is expected to win his second title. Some contenders to beat Gross are Austin Desanto (Iowa), who could possibly move up to 141 lbs, Roman Bravo-Young (Penn State), and Micky Phillippi (Pittsburgh) Prediction- Seth Gross (Wisconsin) captures his second title by taking out Austin Desanto (Iowa).
